The Task:Reflective learning is part of the development of your critical thinking skills.   Reflectivelearning involves taking a personal experience, looking at your initial gut reaction to it,and quietly thinking about that gut reaction.  It then involves building linkages betweenthat experience and other similar situations using your reasoning to test the strength ofthose linkages.  Finally, it involves putting your thoughts out publicly to others, receivingtheir feedback, and thinking about how that feedback changes your initial thinking. In this case, I am going to ask you to reflect on a  public Facebook page posting by auniversity   student   who   wrote,   “I   no   longer   fear   Hell,   I   took   a   course   with   Professor[Smith].”1Two   or   three   students   in   each   group   are   going   to   write   a   two-to-three-page   doublespaced statement discussing whether they think it is right that a student should be ableto post such a public statement in writing or whether alternatively such an action is aviolation of the professor’s rights.   You may take either position, but you must take aposition   one   way   or   the   other   and   stay   with   it.     You   must   provide   two   independentreasons to justify your position.  This two to three-page document must be dropped intothe drop box at 11:59 p.m. the night before the class one week after the assignment isdistributed (i.e., 11:59 p.m. the night before class in week # 11).   This portion will bemarked out of 4 marks. Then, the remainder of the students in each group will have until 11:59 p.m. the nightbefore   the   next   class   (i.e.,   11:59   p.m.   the   night   before   class   #   12)   to   discuss   theconsequences   of   the   position   taken   in   the   first   part   of   the   paper   in   terms   ofconsequences for students, professors, and education at universities as a whole, andthe   consequences   for   other   situations   where   these   same   rights   come   into   play.     Inaddition,   the   second   part   of   the   group   will   provide   one   positive   comment   about   thecontent   of   the   first   part   of   the   paper   and   one   area   where   they   think   there   could   be1Quotation taken from G. Saad, “Student Criticizing Professors Online: A Right or a Violation?”
2improvement and why.  This second part of the paper may be up to five pages in length, but no more. The Marking of the Assignment:Four   marks   will   be   allocated   to   the   first   part   of   the   paper,   evaluating   how   well   youexpress a clear position on the issue and the quality of the two reasons you provide tojustify your position.Six marks will be allocated to the second part of the paper.  Two will be allocated to howwell   you   discuss   the   consequences   for   students,   professors,   and   education   atuniversities as a whole as well as to other situations where these same rights may ariseand collide.   Part of the grading for this will be on how insightful your discussion is onthis   aspect   of   the   paper.     Then   two   marks   will   be   allocated   for   the   quality   of   thediscussion   on   the   positive   aspect   of   the   first   paper   you   identify   and   the   area   forimprovement you identify, particularly in regard to your reasoning

M1 Workshop - Brainstorm a Research Problem

This Discussion is Graded as Workshop 1

People at a lunch meetingThe following questions/issues will lead the discussion of this topic; you can add your own questions.
Let us try to brainstorm some ideas for research problems. I propose some major areas and you can propose others:
  • effects of mass communication media,
  • issues associated with teenagers or adolescence,
  • quality of social services in the community,
  • behavior of people in organizations,
  • psychological experiments,
  • population studies, and
  • criminal behavior.
Formulate questions within these or other areas that can be studied through qualitative or quantitative approaches. Borrow ideas from your colleagues and present alternate questions. Do Internet searches about these broad areas in order to get in virtual contact with your subject of study.
What constitutes a good research hypothesis? Give examples of good and bad hypotheses. Do hypotheses have something to do with the strategy of research that you choose? Explain the relationship between your hypothesis and your research strategy if there is one. Formulate hypotheses respect to the problems identified in the previous question.
Qualitative research is usually not aimed to test hypothesis, but it is a powerful tool for generating hypotheses. In which ways could you use your qualitative, experiential knowledge about the issues mentioned above in order to generate hypotheses? Reflect about a case that you know in any of those areas and try to formulate a valid hypothesis.
You are expected to contribute at least twice in this discussion, and remember to respond to a minimum of two other people's postings. Review the workshop evaluation rubric.

M1 Research Journal

  1. Write a clearly stated research question. Check for clarity and focus of the problem.

  2. To determine if your problem is viable, ask yourself the following questions:  Is the problem encapsulated in a single question? Is it clear that this problem can be approached through social science research (instead of theoretical or speculative reasoning or natural science methodology)? Is it clear that you have no bias as you study this problem? If you were going to study this problem for real, could it be accomplished with reasonable expenditure of time and money? Refine your research question after you have considered these questions.

  3. Look at your research question and reflect on the following questions: Does it have potential for providing important information? Good research problems are usually more complex than yes/no questions. Is it focused enough that you could design a research proposal that would address your question and provide answers? Write a short justification for your problem and cite at least two previous research studies to support your claim.

  4. At the bottom of the paragraph, include full references of the previous research in APA style.

Assignment

  1. Submit an annotated bibliography using APA style for your research project. A minimum of ten academic sources is required. Review Massey University's Identifying Academic Sources link opens in a new window if you are not sure if a source is academic. For an annotated bibliography, provide a brief paragraph describing EACH reference.
  2. Identify and describe at least three key ideas that you have gleaned from these readings in a brief essay (suggested length is 3 brief paragraphs). Consider what you learned from reading these references. How does it justify the need for your own proposed research? This will be the foundation for the literature review that you write for your final research proposal.
Review the assessment rubric link opens in a new window for Research Journal 2.
